This ongoing commitment reflects our belief that a law firm should not only advocate for clients but also invest in the strength and well-being of the community we call home.

The Story of Our Historic Building

Long before becoming home to Braje, Nelson & Janes, LLP, 126 E. Fifth Street carried a unique place in LaPorte's history. The site once housed the Farmer Hotel and a feed stable, remnants of which were uncovered during the construction of the U.S. Post Office in 1909.

Designed in the Colonial Revival style, the building underwent expansion in 1926 and again in 1963. It served the community as LaPorte's post office from 1909 to 1974, after which it was adapted for commercial office use.

In 2007, Braje, Nelson & Janes relocated its offices here and has continued to preserve both the building's function and its character. While modern updates have been made to the interior, much of the original woodworking and architectural detail remains intact.

Notable features include the original "Postmaster" inscription, still visible above one of our attorneys' offices, along with the Postmaster's vault and vault door, once used for storing fireproof records. The lobby retains its original wooden directory cases, which once displayed FBI most wanted posters and now showcase our registration certificate and attorney listings.

Upstairs, the second floor retains its original layout, featuring an office suite once occupied by the Collector of Customs and a single bathroom. Although the concealed shaft, once used by postal inspectors to discreetly observe workers, has been enclosed, its story remains part of the building's fascinating legacy.

This historic building is more than just our office; it's a landmark that connects us to the community we proudly serve. Preserving its character reflects our commitment to honoring LaPorte's past while serving its people today.
