Building History

Prior to construction, the site housed the Farmer Hotel and, specifically, a feed stable sat in the same location as the current construction. Hay and manure were uncovered during construction of the post office, which began and concluded in 1909.

The building was constructed in the Colonial Revival style. After its original construction, the building was expanded in both 1926 and 1963. The building served as post office between 1909 and 1974. Since 1974, the building has served as various commercial business offices.

Braje, Nelson, & Janes moved its law firm into 126 E. Fifth Street in 2007 and has continued occupancy of the property there since. Despite seeing some modernization in the interior over the years, much of the original woodworking and ornate details have been preserved within and without the building.

For instance, the original “Postmaster” inscription remains in place and intact above what is now utilized as an office for one of our attorneys. Within the same office, the original Postmaster’s vault and vault door remain, which originally served as a fireproof records storage vault.

Within our lobby, the original wooden directory cases remain. Now instead of publishing the FBI most wanted posted, we utilize the directory cases to display the registration certificate for our building and the names of our attorneys.

Finally, the second floor has been maintained in its original floorplan- with one office suite once used by the Collector of Customs and one bathroom, although, the second-floor entrance to a vertical shaft that served as a passageway for postal inspectors to observe workers in secret has been enclosed over the years.
